History of ReUse: A Journey Towards Sustainability
Introduction
The ReUse Center in the Eldorado Convenience Center is a joint initiative of Santa Fe County Solid Waste and Eldorado/285 Recycles. Santa Fe County opened the ReUse Center in 2013 as a "last resort" facility to rescue usable or easily repairable items from the landfill. ReUse patrons have an alternative — a dedicated space beside the dumpsters where they can donate or adopt items. ReUse was not intended to compete with the numerous existing charities and free exchange services in Santa Fe; instead, it complements and enhances those services.
Evolution and Adaptation
The journey of ReUse has been marked by a decade of experimentation and adaptation. The collaborating partners continuously refined operational procedures, transitioning from a first-come, first-served casual drop-off point to a structured and manageable service. This evolution showed a commitment to making this valuable community service more accessible and efficient.
Collaboration
At the heart of ReUse's success are the dedicated volunteers of Eldorado 285/Recycles. These individuals play a pivotal role in opening and closing the center’s doors, engaging with patrons to educate them on suitable items for donation, and maintaining and organizing the space. For items ReUse cannot accept, volunteers direct patrons to other disposal options.
Santa Fe County supports the ReUse Center by providing essential resources like dedicated space, signage, and protective fencing. County kiosk attendants monitor the space when the center is closed. The county also assists with disposing of items that do not get adopted, ensuring that they are properly disposed of within our community. This collaborative
effort underscores the commitment of volunteers and local government to promote sustainability and responsible waste management practices.
Impact
At ReUse, our patrons represent the rich tapestry of our community. Donors include those transitioning, downsizing, or embarking on a seasonal bout of spring cleaning. Their generosity breathes life into our mission of waste reduction and sustainability.
Meanwhile, visitors seeking treasures—families on tight budgets, DIY enthusiasts, and artists—find inspiration in our offerings, embracing practicality, upcycling, and creativity. Reuse patrons also find solace when their reusable items and cherished treasures find a new purpose or home.
In 2023, ReUse diverted over 15 tons from landfills — a testament to the collective impact of our community's efforts. We open our doors every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10 am to 12 pm, inviting patrons to discard items and actively participate in building a more sustainable future.
Conclusion
ReUse proves what can be achieved when a community is determined to leave the world a better place. Volunteers and partners have turned ReUse into a symbol of sustainability, showcasing the positive impact when communities unite for a common cause.
